Japanese name:特別展『スウェーデン・テキスタイル 暮らしと自然に息づく北欧デザイン』
📅 Sat, Jul 11, 2026 - Sun, Sep 6, 2026
About this event
Focusing on Swedish textile design, which has rarely been showcased in Japan, this exhibition introduces its charm through approximately 250 textiles and related materials. In the Nordic countries where winters are long and harsh, beautiful interior textiles were essential for making living spaces comfortable. Swedish textiles feature an abundance of approachable, nature-inspired designs, with pop and colorful palettes being a major attraction. With most of its land covered in forests and home to numerous lakes and islands, Sweden's rich nature frequently serves as a motif in textile design, allowing people to feel nature while indoors. Other highlights include narrative designs based on myths and stories, as well as chic aesthetics that balance vivid primary colors with subdued tones. The exhibition showcases textiles that brighten various scenes of daily life, both as interior fabrics such as curtains and bedsheets, and as fashion items like dresses and skirts. It unpacks the history and evolution of Swedish textile design from the mid-20th century onward, along with the stories designers infused into their works.
