About this event

The "23rd Shimokawa Udon Festival," held in Shimokawa Town, Hokkaido, is an annual summer event in this region known as Japan's northernmost home of hand-stretched noodles. This year, the event is scheduled later than usual and will take place in September. Over 30 food stalls will appear at the venue, offering a variety of udon dishes such as curry udon, whole scallop tempura udon, and Jingisukan (mutton) udon. In addition to udon, a variety of food and drinks including yakitori, beef skewers, hamburgers, sweets, and alcoholic beverages will be provided. Event activities include hand-stretched noodle grabbing, a unique challenge called "How Many Grams of Udon?" where participants eat udon down to a specified target weight, and a Nininbaori (two-person coat) speed-eating udon contest. Age-specific participation events are also prepared, such as "How Many Grams of Udon?" exclusively for elementary school students and the "Nininbaori Udon Speed-Eating Contest" for junior high school students and above. Furthermore, players from the professional basketball team "Rana Peaks Hokkaido" are scheduled to visit, featuring meet-and-greets, trial zones, a 3x3 tournament, and an exhibition match. Children's attractions such as target shooting and all-you-can-stuff traditional candy will also be held at the venue, making it an event that the whole family can enjoy. While the event schedule is sometimes altered due to outbreaks of camphor moths (kusu-san), this year it will be held across September 12 (Sat) and 13 (Sun).
