About this event
The traditional folk performing art "Tanuki no Bo-no-te" is dedicated every year on the third Sunday of October at Tanuki Shinmei Shrine in Tanuki-cho, Nishio City, Aichi Prefecture. This "Bo-no-te" originated as a farmers' martial art performed at village festivals and has been handed down across various parts of Aichi Prefecture. In Tanuki-cho, the Kamada school was introduced at the end of the Edo period and has been preserved to this day. On the day of the event, performers ranging from elementary school students to adults demonstrate valiant martial katas in pairs, clashing wooden staffs against staffs or swords. "Tanuki no Bo-no-te" was designated an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Aichi Prefecture in 1959 (Showa 34), offering a precious opportunity to experience the region's history and culture.
