About this event

Continuing since the Edo period, the traditional "Tahara Festival" features gorgeous floats and Karakuri mechanical puppets as its highlights. The floats carrying "Karakuri puppets" are designated as Tangible Folk Cultural Properties of the city, and their procession through the city is a spectacular sight. At night, children perform dances atop the floats, and hand-held Tezutsu fireworks and large-cylinder Otzutsu fireworks are also performed. The charm of the festival lies not in tens of thousands of fireworks, but in the power of the hand-held Tezutsu fireworks and Otzutsu portable shrines. During the climax from evening into night, you can experience the festive passion throughout the entire town. The typical annual schedule features Karakuri floats during the day, night floats in the evening, and fireworks-related events toward the end. In 2026, because the "3rd Atsumi Peninsula Fireworks Festival" is held separately on Saturday, October 10, how you plan your schedule depends on whether you wish to see launched fireworks or the core Tahara Festival's Tezutsu and Otzutsu fireworks. Traffic restrictions are common around the festival center, and crowds gather especially from evening onward, so arriving during the daytime will make it easier to enjoy comfortably.
