Niinamesai (Ise Jingu Shrine)

On November 23, 2026, the Niinamesai festival will be conducted at Ise Jingu Shrine. In this ceremony, newly harvested grains of the year are offered to the deities to express gratitude for nature's bounty and pray for the peace of the nation and the prosperity of the people. At Ise Jingu, the Omike ritual is performed to offer sacred food to Amaterasu Omikami and other deities, followed by the Hohei ritual in which an imperial envoy offers sacred cloth from the Emperor. After the ritual takes place at both main sanctuaries (Kotai Jingu and Toyouke Daijingu) on November 23, it is conducted across all shrines until November 29, including annexes (Betsugu), subordinate shrines (Sessha and Massha), and affiliated shrines (Shokansha). The ceremony is not a spectator event with viewing seats, but depending on the timing, it may be possible to pay quiet respect from the approach paths during regular shrine visit hours. However, the entire ceremony may not be visible, and visitors must follow entry restrictions and instructions on the day. The mindset of "quietly worshipping" rather than sightseeing is essential. As this is not an event for photography purposes, please refrain from reserving spots that obstruct traffic, talking loudly, or approaching the ceremonial procession. Niinamesai is read as "Niinamesai" and is sometimes called "Shinjosai". Occupying an important position among the annual ceremonies of Ise Jingu, it provides an opportunity to appreciate Japan's longstanding food culture and blessings of nature.
