About this event
In Mashike Town, the Ogasawara Maru Victims Memorial Service is held every year on August 22. This memorial service is held to mourn the tragedy that occurred off the coast of Bekkari in Mashike Town on August 22, 1945 (Showa 20). At that time, the Ogasawara Maru, carrying evacuees from Sakhalin (Karafuto), was torpedoed and sunk by a former Soviet submarine, resulting in many casualties. This memorial service is held every year in memory of those who lost their lives, and general attendance is welcome. On the day of the memorial service, the monument—which is normally locked—will be unlocked, allowing visitors to tour the inside of the monument. Those wishing to tour the memorial monument can arrange a visit by contacting the Welfare Section of the Welfare and Public Relations Division at the Mashike Town Office.
