The World of Tsuzumi Performed by Shonosuke Okura

About this event

A tsuzumi drum concert by Shonosuke Okura, an internationally active Noh actor and otsuzumi player, will be held at Kata Shrine in Toba City. Mr. Okura, a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property and an Ambassador for the Agency for Cultural Affairs' Japan Heritage, leads 'Hiten Souno,' a project that re-examines lifestyle culture including food, clothing, and shelter through the traditional performing art of Noh. Having deeply engaged in natural farming, he discovered a connection between agriculture and Noh, conveying a culture of coexistence with nature by planning and performing Noh stages based on a 12-year cycle. Furthermore, he established a new form of expression as the first solo otsuzumi performer in the Noh world, expanding activities beyond traditional boundaries through performances at official ceremonies in Japan and abroad, as well as collaborations with artists from various genres. This is a valuable opportunity to experience up close top-tier artistry and the sharp, clear, and beautiful tones of the tsuzumi resonating through the shrine grounds.
