Oku-Ise Odai Historical Tour: Course 1 - Tracing the Demise of the Ise Kokushi Kitabatake Clan

Odai Town in Mie Prefecture is situated along the upper and middle reaches of the Miyagawa River, Japan's clearest stream, where you can experience rich nature and the lifestyles passed down from ancient times. It had strong ties with the Grand Shrine of Ise and Kumano pilgrimages, with many travelers coming and going. In this event, you can experience the history and culture of Oku-Ise alongside a guide. In particular, it uncovers the history of about 450 years ago, when the Ise Kokushi Kitabatake clan, who ruled Ise Province for 240 years, met their demise in the Mize area of Odai Town. The exploration route involves walking about 8 km, visiting Mizedani Shrine, Bishamondo, Kitabatake Shrine, Mize Castle Ruins, Dozuka (torso mound), Chausuyama Fort Ruins, and more, as well as viewing Buddhist statues and wooden sculptures associated with the Kitabatake clan at Keiunji and Eitokuji Temples. Including a lunch break, it is a valuable opportunity to learn deeply about an episode of the Kitabatake clan's history.
