About this event
This is a traditional annual grand festival held every autumn at Atawa Shrine, located in Atawa, Mihama Town, Mie Prefecture. With a history of over 850 years, this festival offers prayers for bountiful harvests, rich catches, and overall community peace at Atawa Shrine, known as a deity of agriculture and commerce. Shinto rituals are conducted starting around 10:00 AM, and at noon, portable shrines (mikoshi) parade through the town. Upon returning to the shrine around 3:00 PM, lion dances (shishimai) are dedicated, children's portable shrines are carried, and rice cake tossing (mochimaki) takes place grandly, enlivening the entire community. In particular, the children's mikoshi echoing with energetic chants is one of the festival highlights. During the memorial service, the spirits of those who fell in past wars are commemorated, and Shinto rituals pray for local peace and the promotion of commerce and industry. Traditional events such as the Urayasu dance, the lion dance program "Ran-jishi", and the revived "Children's Sumo Tournament" add color to the festival.
