📅 Sat, Aug 22, 2026 - Sun, Sep 6, 2026
About this event
The 'Kanto-sai' held at Kayano Shrine in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, is a summer night tradition where approximately 1,400 to 1,600 red lanterns decorate the shrine grounds, creating a magical world. Located right next to JR Seta Station, Kayano Shrine lights up the lanterns every year from late August to the first Sunday of September, inviting visitors into another world. The lanterns are dedicated by parishioners, worshippers, and companies, and the sea of light is spectacular. On the day, a tea offering ceremony and a flower offering ceremony will also be held, allowing visitors to experience the traditional festival atmosphere. Lantern dedications are accepted at 1,000 yen per lantern for individuals and 3,000 yen per lantern for corporations, making it an ideal event for taking photos and spending a special summer evening.
