About this event
One of the Three Great Festivals of Lake Country, the Otsu Festival is an annual rite of Tenson Shrine that has continued since the early Edo period. Recognized for its exceptional historical and cultural significance, it is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in December 2025. Set in Otsu-juku, which once flourished as the largest post town along the 53 Stations of the Tokaido, the entire city is wrapped in the festive excitement every October. The biggest highlights are the 13 elaborately decorated "Hikiyama" floats and the exquisite "Karakuri" mechanical puppet performances presented atop them. Each of the 13 floats features a distinct theme, presenting fascinating stories based on Noh theater and classical Chinese tales. During Yoimiya (October 10), visitors can enjoy the enchanting evening atmosphere as lantern lights illuminate the floats in the dusk. During the Main Festival (October 11), all 13 floats powerfully parade through the streets of Otsu accompanied by festival music, with the tossing of protective "chimaki" talismans to the crowd serving as another beloved highlight.
