The 18th Toriimoto Post Town Festival
Japanese name:第18回とりいもと宿場まつり
📅 Sun, Oct 4, 2026
About this event
The '18th Toriimoto Post Town Festival' will be held around Toriimoto-juku on the Nakasendo in Hikone City, Shiga Prefecture. Hosted by the Toriimoto Treasure Discovery Team, this festival aims to revitalize the local community using the historical post town of Toriimoto-juku, an intersection of history and highways, as its stage. On the day, an approximately 600-meter section of the Nakasendo will become a pedestrian precinct with kitchen cars and around 60 stalls. On two stages, diverse performances will be presented, including 'Torichu Soran' dances by Toriimoto Junior High School students, Japanese drum (wadaiko) performances, reed flute (yoshibue) music, and jazz band performances. Visitors can also enjoy a historical lecture titled 'Townscape of Toriimoto-juku: Reflecting on the Past and Looking to the Future,' art and brush calligraphy exhibitions by Toriimoto Elementary School pupils, the Toriimoto-juku Nigiwai Market, and the 'Eaves Red Cloth Art' decoration event. The specialty 'Busshoji Miso' will be sold at three locations within the venue and is so popular that it sells out quickly every year. With the opening of heritage-designated traditional houses (kominka) to the public and the Toriimoto Historical Walking Rally where collecting stamps earns a commemorative gift, the event offers plenty of enjoyment for both adults and children. Visitors arriving via the Ohmi Railway will also receive a commemorative gift upon presenting their boarding certificate.
