About this event

Held every year in Iwamizawa City, the "44th Iwamizawa Hyakumochi Festival" is an autumn tradition to express gratitude for Iwamizawa's specialty rice (glutinous mochi rice) and pray for bountiful harvests. Celebrating its 44th edition, the biggest highlight of this festival is the dynamic mochi pounding using one of the world's largest giant mortars (o-usu). Using an extra-large mortar with a diameter of 2.2 meters and a weight of 5.5 tons, mochi is pounded all at once in rhythm with powerful work-song chants using a yoitomake crane system dropped from a height of about 5 meters. Its sheer impact and sense of unity are overwhelming, creating an impressive spectacle that symbolizes the festival. Around the venue, numerous food stalls and kitchen cars will be lined up, offering everything from classic festival staples to delicious limited local gourmet treats. Packed with activities for children and adults alike to taste, see, and experience with all five senses, it will be a special 2-day event filled with excitement and smiles throughout the town.
