Japanese name:信楽陶器まつり
📅 Sat, Oct 10, 2026 - Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
Held in Shigaraki-cho, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture, the "Shigaraki Pottery Festival" is centered on the direct sale of Shigaraki ware and attracts pottery fans from all over the country. Visitors can experience a rich variety of flavorful Shigaraki pottery, including iconic tanuki (raccoon dog) figurines, tableware, umbrella stands, planters, water lily bowls, matcha bowls for tea ceremony, wash basins, and bathtubs. With a long history said to date back to the late Kamakura period or around the mid-Nara period when the capital was relocated to Shigaraki, Shigaraki ware is characterized by highly fire-resistant, plastic, and sturdy clay. When fired without glaze, it produces a very warm scarlet color (flame color, orange, or scarlet). Participating shops across Shigaraki-cho, serving as event venues, offer an extensive selection with unique masterpieces and bargains. Why not look for your favorite vessel while taking an autumn stroll through Shigaraki?
