About this event
Associated with the legendary site of Minamoto no Yoshitsune's coming-of-age ceremony in Ryuo Town, Shiga Prefecture, the traditionally conducted 'Kagami no Sato Yoshitsune Genpuku Ceremony' is a valuable opportunity to experience an ancient coming-of-age ritual. Dressed in formal Kamakura-period samurai attire, participants proceed solemnly from Roadside Station Ryuo Kagami no Sato (Michi-no-Eki Ryuo Kagami no Sato) to Kagami Shrine, where hair-tying and capping rituals (Kamiage-no-gi and Kakan-no-gi) are performed in the shrine's worship hall. Anyone aged 13 and older can participate regardless of age or gender, whether to celebrate a life milestone, as a personal treat, or to mark a commemorative fresh start. Those reaching their 60th birthday (kanreki) or who could not attend their 20th birthday coming-of-age ceremony are also encouraged to experience 'Genpuku' in Ryuo Town and take a new step forward. Including bugaku dance offerings and commemorative photos, it will be a day to directly feel the atmosphere of the good old days.
