About this event
This exhibition introduces the diverse talents of Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797-1861), a late Edo period ukiyo-e artist who stood at the pinnacle of Edo entertainment. Known as the 'artist of wild imagination' with signatures such as 'Kuniyoshi of warrior pictures,' 'huge cat lover,' and 'full of satire and humor,' Kuniyoshi produced first-class works across all genres, including pictures of beautiful women, actor prints, and landscapes. This exhibition divides approximately 200 works—including super-famous pieces such as 'Soma no Furudairi' (Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre), 'Mitsumete Kowai ga Tondai Ii Hito da' (At First Glance He Looks Fierce, but He is a Great Person), and 'Sono Mama Jiguchi Myokaiyoko Gojusanbiki' (Cats Suggested as the Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido)—into six genres, presenting them along with commentary that conveys Kuniyoshi's unique worldview and the lifestyle of people back then. The entertainment Kuniyoshi created not only fascinated the Edoites of his day, but will surely delight us today as well.
