Japanese name:観月の夕べ【旧嵯峨御所 大本山大覚寺】

📅 Fri, Sep 25, 2026 - Sun, Sep 27, 2026

📍 Kyoto, Kyoto

About this event

"Moon Viewing Evening" traces its origins to Emperor Saga boating on Osawa Pond during the Mid-Autumn Harvest Moon to socialize with cultural figures and aristocrats. Looking up, one sees the brightly shining moon in the sky; looking down, the moon reflected upon the tranquil water surface. Visitors can enjoy an elegant time unique to Osawa Pond, celebrated as one of Japan's three best places for viewing the harvest moon, taking in both moons simultaneously. During the event, visits to the temple halls area are not permitted, but admission, strolling, and moon viewing in the Osawa Pond area are available. With a special ticket, guests can enjoy a boat ride on Osawa Pond aboard a dragon-headed, waterfowl-necked boat (Ryuto-Gekikubi-sen) along with matcha green tea.
