Historic Street ART Festival 2026 / Machinami Art Festival

About this event

The "Tamba-Sasayama Machinami Art Festival" features art exhibitions by local and visiting artists held inside traditional merchant townhouses (machiya), including those in the "Kawaramachi Tsumairi Merchant Houses," which is designated as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The traditional machiya preserved by local residents transform into "art museums" and collaborate with various forms of art. Visitors can enjoy an array of art and historic spaces unique to Tamba-Sasayama, including sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass, and photography. It is a townhouse art festival where artists across all genres such as sculpture, painting, and pottery display their creations across more than 30 machiya townhouses within the preservation district. Local artists use the machiya as their stage, styling the spaces with creativity and passion. Gallery talks and workshops by participating artists will also be held during the festival period.
