An official sales start date is set for 'Tamba Sasayama Black Edamame,' the green soybean of the 'Tamba Kuro' variety produced in Tamba-Sasayama City, ensuring people can enjoy its authentic flavor and large bean size. The sales start date for 2026 has been set for Thursday, October 8. The flavor of Tamba Sasayama Black Edamame changes depending on the harvest period: early October offers a fresh and mildly sweet taste; mid-October features a great balance of crispness and umami; and late October brings a rich, concentrated sweetness and savoriness. Because it can only be harvested for about 20 days starting in early October, it is also known as the 'phantom edamame.' Black edamame can be purchased at about 70 locations across the city, with harvesting experiences available at about 15 of them. Weekdays are recommended as weekends get crowded. Purchasing online is also recommended.
