Tanba Sasayama Castle Town Kasuga Shrine Autumn Festival
Japanese name:丹波篠山城下町 春日神社秋祭り
📅 Sat, Oct 17, 2026 - Sun, Oct 18, 2026
About this event
A representative autumn festival of Tanba Sasayama boasting a history of over 350 years. The highlight of the festival is the procession of 9 hokoyama floats and 4 mikoshi portable shrines parading through Sasayama Castle town to the echoing sounds of flutes and drums. Combining both the elegance influenced by Kyoto culture and heroic dynamism, it was designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the city in 2017. Particularly noteworthy is the hokoyama procession along Kawaramachi Street, where utility poles were removed in recent years. Following the removal of utility poles in 2021, the 'Hoosan' and 'Mikasayama' hokoyama floats in Kawaramachi were restored, making it possible to parade with the poles erected once again. On Saturday, October 17, the procession of Mikasayama and Hoosan will be held, and on Sunday, October 18, only Hoosan will parade. The festival is divided into the eve festival (yoimiya) and the main festival (hongu); the eve festival features the hokoyama procession and taiko-mikoshi shrine entry, while the main festival features the hokoyama procession from Kagamiyama, mikoshi procession, and taiko-mikoshi. During the festival period, vehicular traffic restrictions will also be implemented in some sections.
