About this event
The Rishiri Island Salmon Fishing Tournament is a popular autumn event held on Rishiri Island, located in northern Hokkaido. Rooted in the island's marine culture, this fishing competition determines rankings based on clear criteria such as "maximum weight" and "number of fish caught" as participants target salmon. The tournament guidelines establish multiple categories—including Men, Women, Teams, and Families—making it accessible for a wide range of participants. Although the event was suspended for a period in the past, it has resumed under a well-organized management structure. The tournament kicks off early in the morning, proceeding through an opening ceremony, the competition (fishing), port cleanup in some cases, and an awards ceremony. Befitting the title "SALMON KING," large catches (by weight, etc.) receive particular attention, and category-specific prizes may be provided. Safety and etiquette reminders are emphasized at the port, such as not obstructing work areas. For spectators, the awards ceremony offers the most accessible experience, where you can see the actual fish, trophies, and the local atmosphere all at once. Even in early October, seaside areas can get chilly with strong winds, so warm clothing is necessary.
