About this event

Autumn Night Journey of Nara 2026 will be held, illuminating the autumn nights of the ancient capital, Nara. Special nighttime viewings that cannot be experienced ordinarily will take place across five shrines and temples, including World Heritage sites Kofukuji Temple, Gango-ji Temple, and Kasuga Taisha Shrine. Amidst the solemn atmosphere unique to the night, you can leisurely stroll through the quiet shrines and temples of the ancient capital. At Kofukuji Temple, special nighttime viewing of the National Treasure Tokondo (East Golden Hall) is available, where you can view the principal image Yakushi Nyorai seated statue and the Monju Bosatsu seated statue, among others. At Gango-ji Temple, special nighttime viewing of the National Treasure Gokurakudo (Main Hall), illumination of the grounds, and opening of the Horinkan are conducted, allowing visitors to appreciate treasures such as the Five-story Miniature Pagoda (National Treasure). At Kasuga Taisha Shrine, special nighttime viewing of the brilliant vermilion Main Sanctuary (National Treasure) and the special Mantoro, where sacred fires are lit in approximately 1,000 hanging lanterns, will be held. Furthermore, from Mt. Wakakusa offering a panoramic view of the city, you can enjoy an emotional panorama ranging from beautiful sunset scenery to the night view from the summit, selected as one of the New Three Great Night Views of Japan. The Nara Wakakusa Twilight & Night View Bus will also operate to allow visitors to enjoy this magnificent view, offering a special experience to fully savor the autumn night in the ancient capital.
