Japanese name:年越大祓式
📅 Thu, Dec 31, 2026
About this event
This is a Shinto ritual held at Tenkawa Daibenzaitensha Shrine to conclude the year by transferring sins and impurities committed unconsciously throughout the year onto katashiro (paper effigies) and performing purifications through the recitation of the Oharae-no-Kotoba liturgy. This ritual serves as an essential ceremony to cleanse away the sins and impurities of the passing year and welcome the new year with a refreshed spirit. The sins and impurities transferred to the katashiro are purified by Shinto priests. Through this ritual, participants are purified in mind and body and can embrace hope for the upcoming year. Tenkawa Daibenzaitensha Shrine provides an opportunity to spend solemn and sacred moments through this ritual conducted within its historic and dignified atmosphere.
