About this event
A special exhibition titled 'Rosetsu Vivid and Dynamic - Journey to Muryo-ji Temple in Nanki -' featuring the Edo-period painter Nagasawa Rosetsu will be held at the Wakayama Prefectural Museum. Nagasawa Rosetsu excelled at portraying charming creatures and humorous expressions; while being a senior pupil of Kyoto painting circle master Maruyama Okyo, he gained great popularity for his unconventional style. This exhibition focuses on approximately 180 sliding screen paintings (fusuma-e) created for three temples in southern Wakayama Prefecture (Muryo-ji, Joju-ji, and Sodo-ji), which are regarded as Rosetsu's first and greatest work. In particular, centering on the sliding screen paintings handed down at Muryo-ji Temple in Kushimoto Town during the repair of its storage repository, Rosetsu's paintings that seem to come alive in the Kinan region will be exhibited together in one place. Major exhibited works include the Important Cultural Property 'Dragon and Tiger' owned by Muryo-ji Temple, all 55 panels of Muryo-ji's abbot's quarters wall paintings, and numerous sliding door and wall paintings by Nagasawa Rosetsu and Maruyama Okyo. Exhibited works will be rotated during the exhibition period, allowing visitors to enjoy different pieces in the first and second terms. The first term runs from August 11 (Tue, Holiday) to September 23 (Wed, Holiday), with multiple exhibit rotations scheduled. Please take this opportunity to thoroughly enjoy Nagasawa Rosetsu's dynamic and charming world.
