The "Yata Fire Festival" is a festival held in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, blending the long history of Hongu-cho with modern sensibilities. Originating from the legend of Emperor Jimmu being guided in ancient times by the Yatagarasu (three-legged crow), a divine messenger of Kumano, it is positioned as a "festival of guidance" with the intent of "guiding people toward happiness." The festival transitions from the traditional, solemn rituals of a historical period procession into a valiant and energetic celebration featuring taiko drumming and fireworks. The highlight of the festival occurs as dusk falls, when a historical period procession of over 50 participants advances along the Miyukimichi path carrying the sacred flame (Koshi no Tomoshibi) toward Oyunohara. Afterwards, during the Oyunohara ritual, the sacred flame is transferred from the procession lanterns to the "Mikoshi of Flame," and women place Japanese candles around the "Mikoshi of Flame" as the ritual is conducted before the shrine. A powerful performance by the local Oku-Kumano Taiko group further energizes the atmosphere. The grand finale features the "Yata Fireworks" lighting up the Kumano night sky. Bringing together a historical procession, sacred rituals, taiko drumming, and fireworks, the event delivers an enchanting and moving night.
