About this event

Held annually in mid-September at Miwazaki Hachiman Shrine in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, the "Miwazaki Hachiman Shrine Annual Grand Festival (Miwazaki Whale Dance)" is a traditional festival praying for large catches of fish and regional prosperity. The biggest highlight of this festival is the "Miwazaki Whale Dance," which is also designated as a Japan Heritage. Conveying events from traditional whaling practices of the past to the present day, it transforms the whale-hunting scenes into a dynamic, energetic dance. It is said that about 330 years ago, when the feudal lord Mizuno presented whale meat to court nobles in Kyoto, it was arranged as the "Whale Dance." This unique dance strongly reflects the region's history and culture, leaving a powerful impression on visitors. The festival takes place from Miwazaki Hachiman Shrine to Miwazaki Fishing Port, featuring mikoshi (portable shrine) processions and dedication rituals, though these may sometimes be held on different days from the grand festival's main religious rites. More than just a showcase of traditional performing arts, this festival offers a valuable opportunity to experience living culture deeply intertwined with the daily lives of local people.
