About this event
Autumn festivals are held respectively at Higashi-Iwashiro Hachiman Shrine and Nishi-Iwashiro Hachiman Shrine, located in Minabe Town, Wakayama Prefecture. A major feature of both festivals is the dedication of traditional children's dances (ko-odori) performed by elementary school students in the 6th grade and below. At Higashi-Iwashiro Hachiman Shrine, the Kami Yoisame no Ko-odori, Tenarai no Ko-odori, Manzai-odori, and Yakko So-odori are performed. Meanwhile, at Nishi-Iwashiro Hachiman Shrine, the Senbonzakura, Hanazakura, Ogi-mai, Kurokami no Mai, and Yakko Fusa-odori are dedicated. It is said that these dances evolved into their current forms around the Genroku era, when performers were invited from the Kamigata region to develop the kyogen and other arts previously dedicated during the Keicho era. The festival highlights charming dances by children, reflecting vibrant local history and culture.
