Kiyokawa Tenho Shrine Autumn Festival
Japanese name:清川天宝神社の秋祭り
📅 Sun, Nov 1, 2026
About this event
Held in Minabe Town, Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture, the Kiyokawa Tenho Shrine Autumn Festival features the "Myonouchi Lion Dance (Myonouchi no Shishimai)" dedicated each year with magnificent choreography as its main attraction. This lion dance is said to represent the northernmost extent in Wakayama Prefecture of the lineage inheriting Ise Dai-Kagura traditions. The heroic and splendid performance, featuring two dancers moving to flute and drum accompaniments through four musical pieces and three dances—Douchu, Hei no Mai, Midare-jishi, and Tsurugi no Mai—overwhelms all spectators. Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Wakayama Prefecture in March 1976 (Showa 51), it offers a precious opportunity to experience the region's traditional culture firsthand.
