Aisaka Otzutsumi Ugui-tsuki Fishing

About this event

The traditional event 'Aisaka Otzutsumi Ugui-tsuki,' which has continued for about 400 years, will be held at Otzutsumi Pond in the Aisaka district of Ketaka-cho, Tottori City. This fishing method is said to have been introduced from Southeast Asia by the feudal lord Korenori Kamei more than 400 years ago, making it extremely rare in Japan. In 2020 (Reiwa 2), it was designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Tottori Prefecture as 'Fish-trap (Ugui) Fishing in Irrigation Ponds.' On the day of the event, held in conjunction with the draining of the pond to secure agricultural water, visitors can observe and experience catching fish while clearing mud and debris accumulated at the bottom of the pond using a woven bamboo fishing tool called 'ugui.' The 'ugui' fishing tools will be loaned for free, and caught fish can be taken home. Please bring work gloves and wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty. During the event, the preservation society will also give an explanation of the history of Otzutsumi.
