Public Opening of the Hon-Kushiro Residence
Japanese name:本久代家住宅公開
📅 Sat, Oct 17, 2026 - Mon, Oct 19, 2026
About this event
The main house and Nagayamon gate of the Kushiro Family Residence, a Nationally Registered Tangible Cultural Property located in Kasumi, Nichinan Town, Tottori Prefecture, will be opened to the public for the first time since its registration. This event was prompted by the discovery of valuable structures inside the ceiling space during damage assessments following an earthquake in January 2026 (Reiwa 8). This historic home belonged to the Kushiro family, who served as large village headmen (Ojoya) of Hino District during the Edo period; the main building dates from the late Edo to early Meiji periods, and the Nagayamon gate dates from the early Meiji period. Notably, in the 'Zashiki Room,' which is said to have hosted Ikeda Yoshinori, the last lord of Tottori Domain, the suspended ceiling damaged by the earthquake will be exhibited supported by wooden beams, displaying the bamboo used for hanging beams and the hidden ceiling structure. Visitors can also tour the interior of the Nagayamon gate and rare pull-out corridors. It is a rare opportunity to witness both the earthquake damage and the new historical discoveries it revealed. The managing general incorporated association 'Tomarigi' encourages visitors to come and view the residence in its authentic state. Postcards and memo pads featuring the Hon-Kushiro Residence will also be available for purchase at the venue.
