Saka Shrine Annual Festival: Doburoku Festival

At Saka Shrine in Izumo City, Shimane Prefecture, the "Doburoku Festival" (Nigorizake Matsuri), handed down from ancient times as the birthplace of sake brewing, is held. As recorded in the Izumo no Kuni Fudoki, this festival originates from the legend that many deities gathered to brew sake, serving as a sacred ritual to pray for brewing safety and bountiful grain harvests. During the annual festival, sacred unrefined sake (doburoku) brewed by the shrine with a special sake brewing license is served to worshippers. The Brewing Safety Prayer Ritual is held from 10:00, the Parishioners' Festival from 14:00, and from 16:00 to 21:00 in the evening there is an offering of Izumo Kagura, which visitors can watch freely to enjoy traditional performing arts. Visitors can taste the doburoku offered before the deity and fully immerse themselves in the festival atmosphere. However, please refrain from taking the sacred sake outside the shrine grounds.
