About this event
Held in Ama Town, Shimane Prefecture, the '4th Oki Gotoban-san Arts and Culture Festival' is an event commemorating the 800th anniversary of Retired Emperor Gotoba's (Gotoba-in) exile to Oki and passing down Ama Town's rich culture and art to the future. With the overall theme of 'Feeling the waves, creating waves', the festival explores the appeal of the Oki Islands, isolated islands in the Sea of Japan, based on inspiration received from history and culture spanning from 800 years ago to the present day. In this 4th edition, under the original theme 'Looking at the colors of the island (Shima no iro o miru kana)' inspired by waka poetry said to have been composed by Gotoba-in in Oki, it focuses on the various 'colors' of the island, including not only the hues of natural scenery, but also the breath of the earth nurtured over eternal time, diverse cultural exchanges through sea routes, and new bonds and stories. Participants will have the opportunity to discover and express their own 'colors' while experiencing the beautiful nature of the Oki UNESCO Global Geopark, the daily lives of islanders, and cultural diversity. Visitors can pick up the waka poetry of Gotoba-in and enjoy each 'color'.
