About this event

Held with prayers for the revival of Mother Earth and nature's vitality, the "43rd Autumn Jomon Open-Air Firing Festival" revives the ancient spirit and skills spanning over 10,000 years from the Jomon period into modern times to open-air fire Jomon pottery, the vessels of the soul. The shapes and patterns of Jomon pottery and dogu (clay figurines) reflect the worldview of Jomon people praying for the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, and for the earth to overflow with vitality. This festival offers an opportunity to thank the earth and fire, and to experience the message of life and soul passed down from the Jomon period. Participants bring Jomon pottery, clay figurines, clay masks, sculptures, and other creations made with thoughts and prayers, and fire them all together. After the firing ends, the "Jomon Open-Air Firing Grand Prize" and other awards are selected and presented from the finished works, followed by the "Jomon Earth Spirit Dance" performed in gratitude to the earth and fire. Admission is free, but a separate fee is required for viewing inside the Ifurai Museum.
