About this event
This commemorative exhibition presents the works of woodcraft artist Masaki Kawano, a native of Niimi City, and lacquer artist Yoko Shiotsu, a resident of Soja City. Mr. Kawano specializes in hollowed woodwork (kurimono) that highlights natural wood grains with clear contours and wiped lacquer (fuki-urushi), while Ms. Shiotsu excels at vibrant painted kinma (egonma) where vermilion patterns stand out against black lacquer. Celebrating the recent designation of both artists' works as Okayama Prefecture Important Intangible Cultural Properties, this exhibition offers a wonderful opportunity to experience their outstanding craftsmanship and artistry. Through the creations of these two artists with deep ties to Bitchu lacquerware, visitors can deeply appreciate the charm of traditional crafts. In addition, masterpiece selections from the Niimi Museum of Art collection are exhibited concurrently, providing a rich and comprehensive presentation.
