[2026] Dosen-ji Temple Saito Daigoma Memorial Service

About this event

The 'Ushiroyama Saito Daigoma Memorial Service' is held on September 7, said to be the anniversary of En no Gyoja's death, and the following day, September 8, at Dosen-ji Temple, which represents Mt. Ushiroyama, a sacred mountain known as the highest peak in Okayama Prefecture and a training ground for Shugendo. Numerous Shugendo practitioners gather from all over Japan, chanting the Heart Sutra while sounding shakujo (monk's staffs) and blowing conch shells that echo through the mountains. Goma memorial services will be held at the Gyojado Okunoin on September 7 from 10:00, and at the Gomado at the foot of the mountain on September 7 at 10:00 and 13:00, as well as on September 8 from 10:00. As a rule, this traditional event is held even in bad weather. On the day, traffic regulations will be implemented around Gomamichi, along with parking guidance, food stalls, and sales of food and beverages.
