About this event

Held in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, the 'Chestnut Tiger Butterfly Interaction Festival 2026' is an event where you can interact with the Chestnut Tiger butterfly (Asagimadara), a beautiful 'traveling butterfly' that traverses thousands of kilometers across the Japanese archipelago. Characterized by pale light-blue wings, the Chestnut Tiger butterfly arrives every autumn seeking nectar from thoroughwort flowers blooming in the Yakeyama Higashi district. This event was born as the 'Daidoda Community Development Support Association,' formed in the wake of the 2018 Western Japan Torrential Rains, proceeded with improving the local environment through the efforts of residents. By planting thoroughwort, a flower butterflies love, it has become a famous spot where many Chestnut Tiger butterflies alight. In addition, a beautiful mural of thoroughwort and butterflies created in cooperation with students of Showa Junior High School adorns the venue. Local children also participate, with panel displays and plastic bottle crafts themed around the Chestnut Tiger butterfly from Showa Chuo Elementary School, and paintings of the Chestnut Tiger butterfly from Yakeyama Nursery School. Through environmental improvements uniting nursery schools, elementary and junior high schools, and residents, it also serves as a multi-generational exchange venue fostering disaster preparedness awareness. Visitors will receive a gift of origami butterflies made by Showa Junior High School students.
