About this event
Designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture, "Shinden-iri" will take place at Tsuji Hachiman Shrine in Kisa-cho, Miyoshi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. This festival is a lantern-offering ritual held on the eve of the autumn annual grand festival, where bamboo branches hung with lanterns are dedicated to the shrine. At 21:00, signaled by launch fireworks, parishioners from the Tsuji district carry bamboo poles hung with 6 to 8 colorful red and blue lanterns, forming a procession to the shrine while beating drums and gongs to make their offering. The sight of approximately 5,000 lanterns lit up is fantastical and is also referred to as a "Festival of Light." Originating during the Tenmei era (1781–1789), this festival is said to have begun as an expression of gratitude for a bountiful harvest. It is a ritual to welcome the deities with a history of over 200 years, creating a magical and solemn world.
