Walking the Saigoku Kaido: Two-Day Walk 2026

About this event
This is an event where participants walk the Saigoku Kaido highway, once traveled by daimyo lords on sankin-kotai and travelers during the Edo period, led by volunteer guides. In 2026, two courses are prepared. On Saturday, October 17, the walk starts from Minaga Stone Gate and covers approximately 8 km to the Saijo Yokkaichi Honjin Ruins via Hyuga Ichirizuka, Matsukoyama Pass, the Kagomatsu Monument, Imamiya Shrine, and Kayoizaka Ichirizuka. The capacity is 30 participants. On Saturday, October 24, the walk starts from JR Hachihommatsu Station and covers approximately 9 km to the Yokkaichi Honjin Ruins via Nagao Ichirizuka, Hachihommatsu 88 Stone Buddhas, Myofuku-ji Temple, Shimizugawa Shrine, Katsuezaka, and Tokitomo Ichirizuka. The capacity for this course is also 30 participants. The participation fee is 300 yen for adults and 100 yen for junior high school students and younger (including materials, insurance, etc.), and applications are accepted by phone, fax, or Google Form from Thursday, October 1 to Thursday, October 8. You can enjoy the scenic landscapes of Higashihiroshima while experiencing the history of the Edo period.
