About this event

The 'Otokonichi Fire Festival', held every September at Kameyama Hachimangu Shrine in Kitahiroshima Town, Hiroshima Prefecture, has been passed down as an autumn ritual praying for bountiful harvests and the warding off of epidemics. It is said to originate from the Battle of Ogahara about 500 years ago (Muromachi period). A valiant torch procession and flame performance illuminate the night approach path, enveloping the shrine grounds in a magical atmosphere. Large torches carried by young men, set-piece fireworks, and taiko drumming combined with Iwami-style kagura dancing against a backdrop of fire create a powerful and mystical presence. Combined with the rustic mountain village scenery, it invites spectators into an extraordinary 'time of prayer'. This festival also offers the opportunity to enjoy watching Iwami Kagura.
