About this event

The "34th Aio Kuruma Prawn Catching World Championship" will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at Aio YUME Beach (Tada Beach) in Aiohigashi, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. This tournament is an exciting late-summer event unique to Aio, known as the "birthplace of kuruma prawn farming." Approximately 250 kg of live kuruma prawns will be released into the tidal flat, and participants will catch the prawns submerged in the seawater and sand using only their bare hands. Prize winners will be determined and awarded based on the number of prawns caught. Participants are selected by lottery, making it a popular event with an acceptance ratio of roughly 1 in 40 applicants in recent years. On the day of the tournament, a fun lottery will also be held where you can win local specialty products, offering an optimal experience for creating summer memories. The participation fee is 4,000 yen for adults (junior high school students and older) and 2,000 yen for children (elementary school students), with a recruitment capacity of 1,000 people. Applications are accepted online or by postal postcard from Monday, July 13, 2026, to Tuesday, July 21, 2026. Lottery results will be sent only to winners around late July.
