Tenjin Onna Mikoshi (Women's Portable Shrine Festival)

About this event

The "Tenjin Onna Mikoshi" is held on the day of the after-festival (Ato-matsuri) of the Hofu Tenmangu Goshinko Festival (Hadakabo Matsuri). An onna-mikoshi (portable shrine carried by women) carried by approximately 200 women parades through the streets of Hofu along with the Tenjin Hayashi musical band composed of local elementary school students. This portable shrine gives thanks for this year's safety and prays for peace and fruitful harvests in the coming year. The sight of them parading through the town with beauty, grace, and style symbolizes the tradition and vitality of the local community.
