Hizumi Hassaku Grand Dance

Japanese name:日積八朔大踊り

📅 Sat, Aug 29, 2026

📍 Yanai, Yamaguchi

About this event

Continuing for nearly 200 years as the final Bon Odori dance in the Yanai region, this is a wind-calming festival praying for a bountiful harvest. It is also called the 'final wearing of yukata'. Numerous ondo singers, drummers, and dancers from nearby villages participate, reviving the liveliness. In the center of the spacious shrine grounds, a yagura tower decorated with paper strips and five-colored ribbons—boasting one of the largest scales in Yamaguchi Prefecture—is built, brightening the dance. This traditional festival, filled with the wishes of local residents, is a classic sign of the end of summer.
