Art Museum Special Exhibition: "Shiko Munakata: Prayer to the North"

About this event

A special exhibition of Shiko Munakata (1903–1975), known as the "World's Munakata" who built a unique woodblock print art throughout his life, will be held at the Tomakomai City Museum of Art and History. Focusing on works capturing his deeply beloved hometown of Aomori as the "primordial landscape of the north," this exhibition presents works inspired by Jomon and Ainu rituals, as well as statues of deities and Buddhas that can be called the pinnacle of Munakata's art. Highlighting his nostalgia and affection toward Aomori as his roots, along with a gaze akin to a prayer for the development of his homeland, the exhibition explores the depths of Munakata's art under the theme of northern character. As related events, lectures by curators of the Munakata Shiko Memorial Museum of Art, film screenings, gallery talks, and reverse coloring (urazaishiki) workshops are also scheduled.
