Japanese name:第36回 しらおいチェプ祭
📅 Sun, Oct 4, 2026
About this event
The "Shiraoi Chep Festival" is a traditional event of the Ainu people to pray for a bountiful salmon catch and fishing safety, as well as to give thanks for the blessings of the sea. Centered around salmon, which the Ainu people consider the fish (chep) of the gods (kamuy), the event features performances of traditional Ainu dances, hands-on experiences with Ainu embroidery and the mukkuri (jaw harp), and the sale of traditional salmon dishes such as chep ohaw (salmon soup) and chimachep (skewered grilled salmon). In addition, it is a food and experiential event for both children and adults, featuring an Ainu language true-or-false quiz and the annual highly popular salmon treasure-pulling game and lottery. The venue will also host traditional Ainu dances, mukkuri (jaw harp) performances, discount salmon sales, salmon lotteries, and more.
