About this event

The "Ozato Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival & Onna Danjiri," held in Kaiyo Town, Tokushima Prefecture, is a traditional festival that announces the arrival of autumn. The spectacle of 6 vigorous sekibune (boat-shaped floats) and danjiri (floats) racing through while kicking up clouds of sand is breathtaking, and the sounds of gongs and drums excite the heart. Many participants are expected to gather again this year for the "Onna Danjiri" (women's float procession), one of the highlights of the festival. On the day of the event, a diverse variety of ceremonies and entertainment will be held, including Shinto rituals, danjiri shrine entry, the beach entry (hama-iri) of portable shrines, danjiri, and sekibune, lion dances, tengu performances, and yabusame (horseback archery). In particular, the "hama-iri," where the danjiri and mikoshi portable shrines head toward the Kaifu River dry riverbed, decorates the festival's climax. At night, approximately 1,199 fireworks will be launched, colorfully illuminating the autumn night sky. Multiple restrooms are set up around the venue, and shuttle buses will run from the Awa Kainan Cultural Village, ensuring convenient access. This festival is an excellent opportunity to experience local traditional culture and vibrant atmosphere.
