About this event
The Zentsuji Kukai Festival is held on November 3, which is said to be the death anniversary of Saeki Yoshimichi, the father of Kobo Daishi Kukai. It is an event centered on a Buddhist memorial service where Kukai returns home from Mount Koya to offer Buddhist prayers (Gohoraku) to his parents and ancestors. A palanquin carrying the sacred statue of Kobo Daishi departs from the Mieido hall, and a procession through the city (Shichu Neri-kuyo) is conducted. Accompanied by children in traditional attire (chigo) and a Buddhist hymn choir (goeikashu), the procession tours through the city area and returns to the temple precinct (Garan). Afterwards, the 'Saeki Sobyō Gohōraku' service is held in front of the Saeki family ancestral tomb to offer prayers of gratitude to the parents and ancestors. Furthermore, the statue of Kobo Daishi returns to the Mieido hall, and the 'Kobo Daishi Seated Statue Homecoming Memorial Service' is conducted. On the same day, a market is held in the Garan (East Precinct), hosting various events such as 'Naki Sumo' (crying baby sumo) and 'Shishimai Hono' (lion dance dedication). A special public exhibition of the National Treasure 'Ichiji Ichibutsu Hokkekyo Johon' (Lotus Sutra) is also scheduled at the Treasure House.
