The ekiden consists of 4 people per team, with categories of 8 km (2 km x 4 stages) and 17.6 km (4.4 km x 4 stages). The marathon event has 3 km and 5 km categories, divided by age and gender. Particularly noteworthy are the 1.5 km Parent-Child Pair Marathon and the 1 km Dog Pair Marathon running together with pet dogs.
