Japanese name:白鳥神社秋季大祭
📅 Tue, Oct 6, 2026 - Thu, Oct 8, 2026
About this event
The Shirotori Shrine Autumn Grand Festival is an important local autumn festival in Higashikagawa City, Kagawa Prefecture, where traditional performing arts are dedicated. Dedicated rituals featuring dynamic lion dances (shishimai) and yakko dancers take place, including the 'Togashira no Mai' (Tiger Head Dance), a prefecturally designated intangible cultural property. The Togashira no Mai is one of the highlights and is rare nationwide for incorporating dances from the Kabuki play 'Kokusen'ya Kassen' (The Battles of Coxinga). In addition, performances of 'Matsubara Taiko,' a traditional performing art passed down in the Shirotori district, will be showcased to add color to the festivities. A procession festival (Togyosai) reminiscent of a Heian period picture scroll is also held—featuring yakko performers, matchlock gun bearers, tool bearers, the Gohoren imperial palanquin, and children's portable shrines—providing an opportunity to deepen community bonds. Welcoming the harvest autumn, this is an important festival for Shirotori Shrine to offer thanks for the deities' blessings and pray for the peace and development of the parish community as well as good health and safety from disease for all visitors.
