About this event

This exhibition introduces masterpiece ukiyo-e prints that captured the aspects of a turbulent society from the end of the Edo period through the Meiji era and quickly conveyed them to the public. Yakusha-e (actor prints) depicting stars of the kabuki world and monogatari-e (story prints) themed on popular novels were widely enjoyed by the public as entertainment of that era. With the cooperation of the Asai Collection boasting 120 years of history, this exhibition focuses on the aspect of ukiyo-e as "media" to present diverse works by artists such as Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, Ochiai Yoshiiku, and Kawanabe Kyosai, who keenly sensed the changes of the times and produced novel and fresh expressions. The venue also features digital content including immersive exhibits to experience the world of ukiyo-e, offering a new viewing experience.
