Shikoku Karst Primeval Beech Forest Guided Walk: Unraveling Forest Ecology

This is a guided walking tour exploring an approximately 75-hectare primeval beech forest spreading near an altitude of 1,300 meters at the western end of the Shikoku Karst. Once saved from logging by local conservation efforts, this forest continues to serve as the water source for Onogahara and supports community life. Together with a local guide and an insect expert guide, participants will explore the charms of this forest. Through the tour, including observing insects caught in traps set the day before and reflecting after lunch, you can feel firsthand the connections among trees, flowers, and soil-dwelling creatures. Participants will receive an insect specimen, a gift from the forest, as a present. It is a tour where you can experience with all five senses the precious forest ecosystem where natural cycles and human life coexist.
